By the Bog of Cats by Marina Carr

An unrealized project.

This scenic design for this production of By the Bog of Cats sprouted from the necessities and constraints of showing a caravan, a snowy Irish bog, and an elegant wedding in a space fully surrounded by audience members. The visual research stemmed from a desire to give a modern yet weathered look to the elements of the scenery, providing feeling of being stuck. The caravan’s age and style infer its previous owner, Hester’s mother, and the trauma inflicted by previous generations. The two-level wedding table, chandelier, elaborate rug and plentiful greenery provide an aristocratic feeling to the weathered world Hester and her caravan are stuck in. They provide contrast between Hester and the rest of the world, as no one can truly understand her.
