The idea of searching for the meaning of life can be a very daunting and bleak experience, but playwright Branden Jacobs-Jenkins takes a playful approach to the fifteenth century morality play to appeal to a new audience. The scenic world of this show was born out of an eagerness to lean into the playwright’s spirited take on the human experience. Beginning with research into the uncanny and macabre, the set leaned toward circles early in the process, being a nearly universal symbol for unity, eternity, timelessness, the Self, and even God. The childlike connotation but adult infatuation with playfulness granted playground equipment in the form of a swing and a seesaw, both also representing eternal oscillating movement within the soul and mind, a never-ending evolution of the soul’s journey. The paint treatment conjures a liminal feeling and echoes a human fingerprint that could belong to anyone in the cast or audience.
